TreeIcon.png

This tree was added to the site in 2013 and reviewed in 2019.

Further reviews in 2021 resulted in the additions of more details and a substantial descendant branch from Clement at generation 2, plus an expanded descendancy lower down

Another review in 2022, by Mike Bisson, resulted in an expansion of the tree, with a descent from Philippe (1801- ) at generation 8

Further names and details were added by Guy Dixon in another review at the end of 2022

Messervy family page and links to other trees

In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. It is not always possible to carry out such checks on sections of trees with United Kingdom and/or colonial content

Record Search

If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the yellow Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

  14. Master Taylor, of 9, Beresford Street, St Helier, employing in 1861, 10 men and 5 women: 1861 Census, St Helier; otherwise Woollen Draper. With the family there was living George`s 69 year-old St Martin-born spinster aunt, Susanne Messervy (gen. 7) and his 30 year-old unmarried sister Anne, who was still living with them in 1881 at Mont Cantell, in George`s retirement--into being by then a Landed Proprietor: 1881 Census, St Helier. The business, which appears, from directories, to have been sold or terminated, between 1876 and 1878, was described in Hill`s Directory (1874), as that of: "Tailor, woollen draper, hatter, shirt-maker, hosier, glover, and gent`s outfitting establishment, 9 Beresford Street"
  15. (OV 92): "Son of G. Messervy, Beresford Street. Of the Colonial Office, deceased [by 1929]": Victoria College Register. G. F. Messervy seems to have been, as the eldest son, the only one to have initially entered, on leaving College, his father`s business. On marriage in April 1865, he described himself as a Tailor, aged 22, "son of George, Tailor", which agrees with his identity, as given in the Victoria College Register. However, Jersey Directories show that this business was sold or terminated by 1876, as shown also by his father`s entry in the 1881 census, above. George Frederick seems to have made use, after the death of his first wife, of both his education and family connections with the Colonial office, migrating to London to a clerical job in the Colonial Office, as stated by his Victoria College Register entry

  17. (OV.1814). Attended Victoria College, Jersey, 1881-1883, "son of George Frederick (OV. 92)": Victoria College Register. He had no longer any family business to enter, its having cessed by 1876, so he worked in St Helier as an assistant in a Tea Store. The real problem was revealed, however, in the 1911 St Helier Census, when it transpired that George had been blind for seven years, hence having, by then, no occupation, and will have been, in all likelihood, in failing sight long before that time
