The behaviour and discpline of the troops was exemplary. They did not mix with the civil population. They had their own church services and cinemans; they were not allowed at dances; and, whenever they had occasion to meet the civilians in shops and restaurants, they were always civil and polite. They always walked in town in a smart manner, and they were properly dressed. All this was far from what the population had expected. It was very rare to see a drunken soldier, sailor, or marine.
