Record Search

Direct links to lists of baptisms, marriages and burials for the Garnier family can be found under Family Records opposite. If you want to search for records for a spelling variant of Garnier, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the
family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter,
for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want
and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the yellow Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

New records

From August 2020 we have started adding records from non-Anglican churches, and this process will continue as more records, held by Jersey Archive, are digitised and indexed. Our database now includes buttons enabling a search within registers of Roman Catholic, Methodist and other non-conformist churches. These records will automatically appear within the results of any search made from this page.

Origin of surname

Garnier is derived from the medieval personal name 'Garnier', which in turn derives from the Germanic Warnhari, 'attentive', 'vigilant' and 'armed'. Gasnier is believed to be a variation from the west of France, but the names appear to have developed entirely separately in Jersey.

Early records

Although both names were listed in the Extente of 1528, Gasnier is found in church registers from 1635, whereas Garnier does not make an appearance until 1794, with the arrival of a new family from Brittany.

Variants

Modest war hero

These three photographs of his father from the early to late years of World War Two were sent to us by Paul Garnier with the accompanying text:

"I've attached a photos of my Father Francis John Garnier taken during his military service during World War Two. I believe he enlisted into the Army in late 1938 upon reaching his 18th birthday.
"He served in several different theaters of war, starting with the North Africa Campaign in 1940 (his first posting overseas). When Japan entered the war he was posted to the Far East as part of the British Indian Army and saw service in Burma. During the final stages of WW2 he was transferred from the Far East to Europe where he took part in the Italian Campaign. With the war in Europe all but won, he was once again transferred back to the Far East where he remained until the end of the war against Japan, and eventually returned back to Jersey sometime in 1947.
"I've attached the photos in date order, although the only one I can be sure of is the first, when my father must have been no older than 18-19 (1938-1940). Given the rate of British casualties in North Africa, my father rose through the ranks very quickly and upon arriving in the the Far East was promoted to the rare rank of Subconductor, a rank between WO1 and Lieutenant. He could not have been much older than 21/22 and he, along with many, believed he was the youngest subconductor in the history of the British army.
"He was offered a commission on numerous occasions, which he refused, but was eventually talked (by my Grandfather, who was a senior Indian Army officer) into accepting the rank of Captain, some time in late 1943 early 1944. My father ended up marrying his daughter, my mother, Theresa Celine Hughes-Parker.
"I should point out that my father was a very modest man from a working class background and spoke very little about his war experiences. Often, when he started to recount some of his experiences, he would stop, and you could see he was in deep thought and never went any further. So I'm as much in the dark today as I was as a child regarding my father's war. However, having read around the campaigns he took part in, I now know why he found it difficult to speak about them."
Ministers and lay preachers of the Methodist French Circuit in 1867, including P Garnier. The picture was taken by Asplet and Green a year after they set up in business at 18½ Beresford Street and also includes P Tourgis, Philippe Amy, P Le Gresley, Thomas J Desprès, Mr Ahier, Mr Benest, P Norman, Mr Hamon, D Bisson, G Le Masurier, Abraham Pallot, J Syvret, P G Adair, G Skelton, T Binet, T Billot, Mr Vautier, E de Carteret, W Le Duc, T Lucas, H Collas and J Le Cornu

Tips

The church record links above will open in a new tab in your browser and generate the most up-to-date list of each set of records from our database. These lists replace earlier Family page baptism lists, which were not regularly updated. They have the added advantage that they produce a chronological listing for the family name in all parishes, so you do not have to search through A-Z indexes, parish by parish.

We have included some important spelling variants on some family pages, but it may be worth searching for records for a different spelling variant. Think of searching for variants with or without a prefix, such as Le or De. To search for further variants, or for any other family name, just click on the appropriate link below for the first letter of the family name, and a new tab will open, giving you the option to choose baptism, marriage or burial records. You will then see a list of available names for that type of record and you can select any name from that list. That will display all records of the chosen type for that family name, and you can narrow the search by adding a given name, selecting a parish or setting start and end dates in the form you will see above. You can also change the family name, or search for a partial name if you are not certain of the spelling

New records

Since August 2020 we have added several thousand new records from the registers of Roman Catholic, Methodist and other non-conformist churches. These will appear in date order within a general search of the records and are also individually searchable within the database search form
