Origin of Surname
It is suggested that this name comes from a Savoie word for ‘maze’ or from fillot, French for a small child.
Early records
The name is not found in any of the 13-14th Century Assize Rolls and Extentes, or the Jersey Chantry Certificate of 1550. Peter Fiott of Jersey was, to cite Some Old Fiott Papers, in ABSJ XII, 409, Fellow of Exeter College, Oxford, in 1647. A little earlier:
- Michel Fiot and his wife Katherine are shown as parents for the baptism of Jane Fiot in St Helier on 15 Nov 1597.
- Michel Fiott (1601- ) of St Helier was the son of Michel and Katherine and probably the brother of Jane above
- Etienne Fiott (1628- m (1653) Marie Le Brocq, d of Jean
- Aaron Fiott (1617- ) of St Saviour was the son of Philippe
- Jean Fiott of St Helier m Magdelene and they had sons Philippe (1597- ) and Jean (1603- )
- Pierre Fiott (1631- ) of St Saviour was the son of Pierre
- David Fiott (1676- ) of St Helier was the son of Jean and Marie Goupil.
A likely date for this family`s settlement in Jersey would be one in the 1570s, not long after the St Bartholomew`s Day massacre of French protestants
Payne's Armorial of Jersey
The family of Fyot, Fiot, or Fiott, appears to have existed in Jersey for some centuries, where it has always held a respectable social position. It may be supposed, owing to the identity of surname and similarity of coat-armour, a branch of the distinguished house of Fyot de la Marche, one of the most eminent of the Duchy of Burgundy. Two branches of this latter bear titles of nobility; one, that of the Marquisate de la Marche, and the other, that of the Marquisate de Mimeure.
The parent stock is traced to Guillaume Fyot, who represented the family in 1382. The branch of Jersey settled in the parish of Saint Saviour, whence a section removed to St Helier, and in the person of Nicholas Fiott, (who was buried in the churchyard of that parish, where a handsome monument exists to his memory) became possessed of the Fief Haubert of Melesches.
A branch of the same family is located in the parish of Saint Brelade, and is there represented by Mr John Fiott. Another settled in Guernsey in the seventeenth century, but is now extinct.

For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.
New records
Since August 2020 we have added several thousand new records from the registers of Roman Catholic, Methodist and other non-conformist churches. These will appear in date order within a general search of the records and are also individually searchable within the database search form
