- ↑ A successful London merchant, latterly in partnership with his nephew, John. The firm was, at that point in time, Messrs. James and John Poingdestre & Co. of 65, Old Broad Street. In 1786, he wrote from Honduras to John Fiott in London, concerning shipments of wood to Great Britain and to enquire regarding the possible purchase of a ship: Letter at the Jersey Archive: L/C/88/A/101. His involvement with the Honduras trade in timber makes him likely to have been the "Poingdestre" who was, in 1792, Aaron de Ste Croix`s co-owner and partner in two vessels, being ostensibly engaged in the Newfoundland trade: A.G. Jamieson, (ed.), A People of the Sea, (London and New York: Methuen, 1986), 315, also J. John, Jersey Sailing Ships, (Chichester: Phillimore, 1982), 48. In fact, he may have `discovered` the potential of Honduras mahogany as a lucrative commodity for the building trade and introduced de Ste Croix to its possibilities, the latter having always previously been credited with its Jersey discovery. The vessels co-owned by Poingdestre and de Ste Croix, who shortly after 1792 made his fortune in Honduras, were the 110 ton Success and the 129 ton Vine. John Jean writes that the former had been owned since 1783. The latter, which he records as having been wrecked off the Scillies in 1796, was owned by the said partners in conjunction with Robinson. This, in its turn, links Poingdestre to another vessel, whose owners in 1792 were "Poingdestre and Robinson", being the 68 ton Corbet, the captain of which was Germain Aubin, probably the man of this name who had married Poingdestre`s first cousin. James Poingdestre`s principal, and no doubt original, Jersey property that he sold, on the 25th December 1824, to Abraham de Gruchy, was his grande maison, with its land, shops and stables, at 52, King Street, St Helier. He retired from commerce to live at Bedford Square, Brighton. His PCC. Will, dated the 26th November 1833, mentions his having also had interests in Guatemala. Although he died "aged 83 years" in June 1841, his Will was proved by his daughter, only in 1846
