Descendants of Pierre Poingdestre

TreeIcon.png

Although the forename Jean, rather than John, was almost universally used in Jersey from the 12th century until the 18th century, the early Poingdestres are commonly found as Johan, or John. The forenames in this tree researched by La Société Jersiaise (a combination of all three variants), have been left unchanged. The tree shows Jurat John Poingdestre at Generation 3 as Bailiff. However, no confirmation of this role has been found elsewhere, the only Poingdestre to hold the office apparently being Jean Poingdestre, in 1452-52, who is shown at Jurat John Poingdestre at Generation 5 in this tree

Record Search

If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the yellow Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

  18. Guillaume`s son Jean was described on marriage in 1635, as being of St Saviour, where his father was living in 1606, when he presented a daughter for baptism. However, the father, a younger son, must have lived for a decade or more elsewhere - presumably in a parish without surviving 16th century registers - as the baptisms of his children have not survived. Pending confirmation from the Jersey Land Registry, their inclusion above and lins must be regarded as provisional. Godparents do, however, support the placements

She is placed solely on godparent evidence
  23. Settled at La Chênée, in the Vingtaine of Hérupe, St John, on the property his wife had inherited from the Hamons: Fo 41; K9: "Short Genealogical Tables" at La Société Jersiaise
  24. Godfather: Helier Romeril, fils Jean
  25. Extente (1749), 63. Four cabots of wheat, amounting to £6, were annually due, as recorded in 1749, to the Crown, on Marguerite Le Sueur`s property. In that year, her husband, son and grandson having previously died, the sum was owed by her great-grandson, Abraham Poingdestre. That he was recorded as owing it in person shows that he had to have then been of age. He may have been baptised in 1730 but he will have been born in 1729
  26. Buried as "Mons. Abraham Poingdestre"

He was the father-in-law of Edward Charles Malet de Carteret, and said to be the Island`s richest man. This was certainly an exaggeration. However, his inheritance enabled his son-in-law`s decayed and neglected manor house to be repaired and greatly extended

  32. Of Les Landes, St Ouen
  33. Godparents: Master Helier Romeril and Mistress Jeanne Poingdestre, his wife
