The last source describes Ralph as having brown eyes, dark brown hair, fresh complexion with a height of 5` 8". He lost his life serving in the Merchant Navy in 1942, during WW2, as Master of the SS Sheaf Mount. His name features on the UK Shipping and Seamen WW1 and WW2 Roll of Honour memorial, Tower Hill, London

Perhaps this was Alfred junior and the name mistaken? Alfred senior is remembered as having been latterly blind. This may well have been work-related
