In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. It is not always possible to carry out such checks on sections of trees with United Kingdom and/or colonial content

Record Search

If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the yellow Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

Notes and references

  1. In a docket of letters regarding his de Gruchy forbears, in the possession of the late Tim Voisin, was the following. Maggie Gruchy, née Gaudin, wife of Walter Collis Gruchy, wrote in 1950 to her 1st cousin Louisa Ogier, wife of Colonel Voisin, "John [de Gruchy Gaudin] has in his possession, besides a portrait, a notebook with a calendar of 1843, inserted a gold pencil, presented to Thomas [de Gruchy, of whom they were then writing], with the arms of the Marshal worked on the cover and a seal with coat of arms...I think I saw them as a child when "Cousin Lizzie" [Elizabeth de Gruchy, wife of John Gaudin and mother of John de Gruchy Gaudin] was showing them to my father." Attached is a handwritten genealogy of some of those concerned and a typed summary of items received by Thomas de Gruchy from Marshal de Grouchy. The list is as above, but omits the seal with coat of arms. There is, though, in the list the comment "The Marshal`s arms are also on a silver sugar sifter." Thomas de Gruchy is shown above, holding this

  15. Renowned silversmith and clockmaker. In the 1841 St Helier census, there was recorded living with him, his cousin Esther de Gruchy (1778-1869), described as a servant. She was believed to have been his housekeeper and companion. The principal heir of Thomas was his nephew, the silversmith Jean Le Gallais. The latter`s descendant in a female line, Patrick Carter, has to this day in Canada, the two matching portraits, which have been stated for more than a century and a half to be those of Thomas de Gruchy "and his wife". It was frequently the custom to portray a sitter holding an object denoting their occupation or with some prized possession - in this instance it was an engraved silver sugar sifter. The engraving, held so as to face the viewer of the portrait, depicted the arms of Marshal de Grouchy, who had recognised Thomas de Gruchy in 1836 as being one of the three Island representatives of his own Norman family. The identity of de Gruchy was never in doubt, and went unchallenged. However, he never married, which has caused confusion. Nevertheless, the accompanying portrait of the supposed wife will logically have been that of Esther de Gruchy, his cousin and companion. Glenys Lawrence of New Zealand, a Le Bailly and Le Vasvasseur dit Durell descendant, after corresponding with Thomas de Gruchy`s eventual heir, through the Le Gallais and Roy families, wrote in the 1990s, that the portrait of the man was dated, upon close inspection, 1844. That of the woman, now believed to be of Esther de Gruchy, was dated 1848. Both were by an artist named "C.S. Le Bailly", who is yet to be identified: see also Descendants of Jean Le Gallais and Francoise Boivin
