Notes and references

  1. ↑ Jean was was believed to have been the son of Elie Nicolle, son of Elie and Jeanne, nee Neel, and Jeanne, nee Gruchy; or Henry Nicolle, son of Thomas and Sara, nee Le Tubelin, and Marguerite, nee Amy. This lineage has been challenged, with the suggestion that Jean was the son of Jean and Marthe, nee Perchard, and is currently being reinvestigated
  2. ↑ Baptism record not found. Found guilty of the murder of Solomon Levi and sentenced to death. However, Queen Victoria commuted the death sentence to one of banishment and he was sent to Tasmania in a convict ship and arrived there on 17 February 1847. There he married again (bigamously?) to another convict Charlotte Shaw, and they had two children - Thomas Shaw Nicolle and Ann Catherine Nicolle
