Elias Neel (1834- ), formerly of Sion Hall, St Saviour

This was one of the earliest trees added to the site in 2010. Further research identified a number of inaccuracies, particularly in the names of wives, but more details were added following the submission of a new tree in 2018. The tree is based upon that featured in J. B. Payne, An Armorial of Jersey, 297-298, with minor amendments and additional details, when noted. Marion Turk, in The Quiet Adventurers in North America, (Detroit: Harlo, 1983), 473-477, has many further details and descendants of more recent generations

The tree was further reviewed in January 2019 and extra information added. Siblings out of the direct line of descent, whose presence in the tree is not supported by parish records, have been removed.

Record Search

If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the yellow Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

Notes and references

  1. Almost certainly the son of Jacques Néel, le Viel, "fils Macy Néel," the latter having been born circa 1470: Cour d`Héritage, Livre 4 (September 1579). Jacques Neel (gen. 1) will have had an uncle, Bernabey Neel, whose daughter (name unknown) married Gratien Romeril
  2. Called "Jacques Neel le plus jeune", being "the youngest" in 1583, when he will have been of age (20 in Jersey), making a date of birth on, or a little before, 1563: Cour d`Héritage, Livre 5 (1583)
  3. Settled in Longueville, St Saviour in about 1797. Elie`s placement within the tree is based upon that shown in J.B. Payne, An Armorial of Jersey, 298
  4. Engraved over the backdoor to what would then have been a farmhouse on the site of, and later enlarged into, the mansion called Sion House, that became after 1942 Hotel L`Emeraude, in Longueville, St Saviour, are the letters: "ENL x IAH" with the date 1802?, for Elie Neel and Jeanne Ahier, his wife
  5. Godparents: Francois Neel and Sara, his sister (below). This Elie Neel (1788- ) was probably the man of that name who founded Sion House School in 1825, as mentioned in Philip Ahier, A Short Commercial History of Jersey, (Ashton & Denton, no date), 105-106, although he confuses him with his son, who was then aged sixteen, and confuses his son with his grandfather, who married Jeanne Ahier
  6. Of Sion Hall, St Saviour; Deputy of that parish, 1859; Jurat, 1860-1873. He was one of the Island`s leading Methodists, and was also a well-to-do landowner. As such, he took over in 1870, in association with Mr Philip Ahier, who was probably a relative of his grandmother, the former Messrs. Arthur, de Carteret & Co. bank, named the Jersey Joint Stock Bank. Most of the Methodists banked with the new company. Unfortunately, three years later, an international recession caused multiple banking and business failures. It transpired that Neel, having no banking experience, as well as Ahier, had taken no precautions against such an eventuality. At their trial in 1873, in which they were both acquitted of any fraudulent or dishonest action, it was stated, however, that they had "an incomprehensible lack of business ability". Elie Neel was ruined, as were many within Methodist circles, his clients. He resigned from the bench of Jurats, and left the Island to settle in Birmingham with, it is said, various relatives
  7. Banker and House Proprietor, at Sion House: 1871 Jersey Census, St Saviour
  8. His 1st cousin
  9. Proprietor
  10. Pascho Hoskins, Methodist Minister, aged 37, a Widower, son of Thomas, Gentleman, married Maria at the same parish and time as her brother, Elias junr., above
  11. Surveyor, as was his father
  12. Protestant minister in Nïmes, France
  13. John Neel, James Neel, Albert Neel, Emma Jane Neel (b. ca 1844; marriage above, aged 20), Louisa Neel, Emily Neel, Ann Neel, Maria Neel and Lydia Neel
  14. From whom descended Miss Ann Gaudin, M.A. of Wareham, Dorset
  15. Marie and her sister were christened together in St Saviour. They were not described as twins; one may have been born in the years 1789 to 1796
  16. Apparently no issue
  17. Master Mariner; captain of Success (1786), owned by Poingdestre and de Ste Croix. Captain Elie Neel is now thought to have had built Elizabeth House, Castle Street, St Helier
  18. Merchant, 1813-1834, and then with George Alexandre of Mont à L`Abbé, 1834-1840s, as Neel and Alexandre: J. Jean, Stories of Jersey`s Ships, (Jersey: La Haule Books, 1987), 104-105, which refers to their barque Othello, struck by lightening and damaged in 1836, in Belize
  19. Of Elizabeth House, Castle Street, St Helier, Merchant. Joan Stevens, in Old Jersey Houses, Volume II, 106, gives interesting details of the interior of such a merchant`s house, which was most regrettably demolished in the 1990s: "There were railings in front and a lamp on a bracket over the entrance. There is [was] a good mahogany staircase, rising to two flights to serve bedrooms and what were mere attics above. In the newel post is [was] a large pottery medallion of Brittania with the date (no longer very clear) 1797...it seems likely to be the date when the house was built [It was also the marriage date of Elie`s parents. This suggests that Elie`s grandfather, Captain Elie Neel, had the house built, perhaps as a wedding present for his son, who was then aged 22]. There is a dining-room on the first floor with a built-in sideboard, similar to one at La Haule Manor (1796); it is set in a concave recess. Some of the doors are mahogany.." However, Mrs Stevens seemed to be of the opinion that this branch of the Neel family were ship-builders, something that has not been easy to confirm. John Jean, the contributing editors of A People of the Sea, Balleine and others record no ship-builders, but only shipowners and masters, of this name
  20. Captain, RJM. A merchant in 1859, Elias Andrews Neel was in 1874 Secretary of the Jersey Mutual Insurance Society for Shipping
  21. Gentleman Farmer
  22. Merchant, in 1887
  23. Gentleman
  24. NPC: Probate was granted to Frederick William Neel, Gent.
  25. Fleet-Paymaster (Captain) R.N.
  26. His naturalization form, Co. Burleigh, North Dakota, shows him to have been born in 1874, Jersey, England, to be, by occupation, a "Travelling Claims Agent", of 5ft 11 1/2" in height, of light hair and blue eyes
  27. Of Castle Street, St Helier, as were his surviving brothers
  28. Occupation in 1870: Commis (Agent)
  29. Master Mariner
  30. Civil Servant: 1881 Census, Kensington: "Edmund Neel, 39, born in Jersey, married, Clerk in India Office; Constance P. Neel, wife, 33, born in Bath; Edmund W. Neel, son, 3, born in Kensington; George H. Neel, son, 2, born in Kensington; Elsa P. Neel, daughter, 4 months"
  31. Elizabeth Matthews, second wife of Captain Elie Neel, probably had their subsequent family home, Elizabeth House, Castle Street, named after her in 1797, when the house is thought to have been built (see above)
  32. Like his father and uncle, he was a Master Mariner, being captain of Two Brothers in 1778
  33. Master Mariner; privateer captain
  34. Master Mariner, captain of Molly (1778) and master and owner of the 36 ton sloop Southampton Packet, 1780-1790
  35. Their son, George Romeril junr. (1763- ), had as godfather Richard Romeril, his "Grandfather", and as godmother, Marguerite Huggins, his "Grandmother". This resolves confusion as to which Frances Neel married Charles de Ste Croix, above
