  1. ↑ Jean Villeneuve was, by occupation, a Master Mariner, being master in 1704 of Marie. He was subsequently a merchant and shipowner, living at La Vielle Mason, St Aubin. His son Gedeon was also a merchant: John Jean, in Jersey Sailing Ships, (Chichester: Phillimore & Co., 1982), 59. Jean`s other sons, Jean junior and Pierre, were also likely to have been merchants

The legal rank "Esquire", with the exception of major seigneurs, Oxbridge graduates and advocates, denotes in Jersey a naval officer or militia officer of the rank of captain or above
