du Heaume family page and links to other trees

In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. It is not always possible to carry out such checks on sections of trees with United Kingdom and/or colonial content

Record Search

If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the yellow Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

Notes and references

  1. It has not been possible to idenfity the parents of Edouard or Jeanne, nor to link them to any of our other du Heaume trees. The most likely parents for Edouard are Edouard and Lucrece, nee Belin, of St Ouen, or Amice and Marie, nee Vibert, also of St Ouen. There are more candidates for parents of Jeanne Aubin, who appears likely to have come from the north-east of the island - St Saviour or St Martin

  4. In an example of one of the numerous kinships that rendered confidentiality, both in business and banking, so difficult in 19th century Jersey, Jean Kerby`s 1st cousin, Matthieu Horton of La Fosse, St Peter, had married Elizabeth Le Brocq, the maternal aunt of William Philip de Gruchy, Philippe du Heaume`s predecessor (1863-1877) as director and partner at the Jersey Banking Company. Furthermore, another 1st cousin had married his great-uncle. De Gruchy had withdrawn from the partnership, in order to found his own bank, due to serious disagreements with the senior partner, Philip Gosset. De Gruchy`s son, William Laurence, who inherited his father`s directorship of the Jersey Banking Company, was frequently at odds, therefore, with both Gosset and the latter`s perceived allies, which included du Heaume. These, and other problems involving the old Jersey firm, Charles Robin & Company, a major client of the bank, regrettably became, in 1886, public knowledge, causing a fatal run on this and another bank: see Abraham de Gruchy`s Successors. Mary Peggy died following her son's birth
  5. Banker, 1877-1886, (Jersey Banking Company), Jurat (1868-1886) and Lieut-Colonel (1868), Royal Militia Artillery Island of Jersey. The bank crashed, along with many English banks, during the international trade recession of 1886. There were, however, various contributing factors, (see above). Du Heaume was cleared of any blame, as were his fellow directors. The senior partner and manager, Gosset, was convicted and imprisoned on charges of embezzlement and fraud
