- ↑ Born in St Martin; settled in St Helier: Mariner and Stone mason. In the 1881 Census, St Helier, he was a Widower living with his St Helier-born daughter Matilda, aged 6. He was probably already engaged to marry the younger Eveline Mauger, as he had reduced his age by six years, which was also the case in the 1891 St Helier Census and at the time of his death. His wife was a widow, living with their daughter Eva, in the 1901 Census
- ↑ In the 1891 census, St Helier, Eva Steel, aged 9, is shown as one of two children. The other is the above Matilda, now aged 15, and born also in St Helier. This, and Thomas Steel`s having been a widower in 1881, enable the date of a second marriage to be estimated as about the end of 1881
