Origin of surname

Blondel is a variant of the French surname Blondin, a diminutive of blond (someone with blond hair). It is most common in France in the Seine-Maritime region, but is found all along the Normandy coastline.

It is well established in Guernsey, both Matthew Blondel and Colin Blundel appear in the 1309 Assizes.

There is a legend that the French troubador, Blondel de Nesle, rescued King Richard I and was rewarded with property in Guernsey^[1].

The name has also been present in Jersey since the 16th century.

Family album

Marie Augustine Blondel and her granddaughter Lily Glover. Marie came to Jersey in 1852 with her 'husband' Auguste Pierre Boivin. The banns were read for their marriage in Normandy in about 1850 but they never actually married. They had 14 children, all but the first born in Jersey
